I had the same problems as Nelson, ran sudo on initdb and this was my repsonse:

initdb: cannot be run as root
Please log in (using, e.g., "su") as the (unprivileged) user that will
own the server process.

Not sure where to go from here. Did a TON of googeling with no resolution.
